To say the Volts had an electric start to the Athletes Unlimited Softball League season would be an understatement. Both offense and defense were firing, which is why both the Player and Pitcher of the Series hail from this squad.
Player of the Series: Danieca Coffey
Imagine hitting .800 your first weekend as a pro. That was reality for rookie Danieca Coffey, who was 4-for-5 in the series against the Blaze. Even more impressive is that she made this impact largely off the bench, with just one start in three games of the season opener.
She had three RBIs, including a clutch double with runners in scoring position on Sunday. Coffey drove in two runs to give the team a lead they would never relinquish.
The Volts won the series 2-1. The LSU alum will be back in the bayou as the AUSL heads to Sulphur, Louisiana, on Thursday for the start of their series against the Bandits at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
Pitcher of the Series: Rachel Garcia
Rachel Garcia was in prime form on Saturday night, getting the first-ever start and win in the circle for the Volts franchise. Confidence in the ace was on full display even as the game turned into a thriller.
Garcia went the distance, tossing a complete game into extras. Throwing across eight frames, she allowed just one run on four hits while striking out eight batters. It didn’t take long for Garcia to find her way into the AUSL record books and become the first pitcher to throw a complete game in the league.
She made another appearance on Monday, coming in as a closer. Garcia threw 1.2 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while logging a strikeout and no walks.
