This year’s NCAA Division I Softball Tournament has been nothing short of exciting – and it’s just getting started. Stunning upsets, barnburners, and walk-off winners highlighted the weekend of play as 16 teams emerged from double elimination to go on to super regionals.
Four Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) Draftees continue on the journey to the Women’s College World Series: Sam Landry (Oklahoma), Korbe Otis (Florida), Bri Ellis (Arkansas), and Michaela Edenfield (Florida State).
Here’s how they helped their teams prevail and look ahead to their upcoming schedules this weekend.
Landry remains true for the Sooners
Pitcher Sam Landry has been Oklahoma’s go-to arm all season, and she continued to be reliable during their three wins in regional play.
She started the tournament facing Boston University, throwing three scoreless innings. Landry surrendered two hits and one walk.
She started again the next day against California, throwing across four frames. It was her 21st win of the season, striking out four while stranding seven Cal runners. She was back in the circle to face Cal on Sunday and only allowed a single hit in three innings of work.
The combined effort of Landry and the OU pitching staff allowed just two earned runs over the three games.
Next, Landry and the Sooners will host a best-of-three Super Regional vs. Oregon. Action starts Friday at 10 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
Gators run-rule their way to the next round
Florida cruised through regional play in Gainesville, run-ruling Mercer twice and Florida Atlantic in their three victories.
With limited plate appearances due to only 15 total innings played, outfielder Korbe Otis was still productive for the Gators. She was 1-for-5 with two runs scored and three walks.
The Gators will host again for Super Regional play against Georgia. Tune in to see Otis on Friday at 11 a.m. ET on ESPN2.
Ellis draws six walks in Razorbacks’ three wins
Arkansas defeated St. Louis, then Oklahoma State twice, to advance to the Super Regionals. Pitchers continue to work around Bri Ellis, who weilds one of the most damaging bats in college softball. She drew six walks across three games, four of which were in the same game, tying her career-high.
Ellis continued to move her way up in the program record books: she scored her 64th run of the season which is the second-most in program history (trailing only KB Sides who scored 67 in 2022) and she became just the second player in program history to record 60+ walks in a season (joining Devon Wallace who walked 79 times in 2013).
The Razorbacks will meet Ole Miss on Friday at 8 p.m. ET with coverage on ESPNU.
Edenfield comes through to help the Seminoles advance
Florida State moved past Auburn in a winner-take-all game on Sunday to advance with help from catcher Micahael Edenfield behind the dish and at the plate. The Seminoles suffered a loss to the Tigers earlier in the day, so both teams were on the chopping block that afternoon.
Edenfield helped her team strike early, blasting a two-run home run in the first frame. She is now at 50 RBIs this season and joins AUSL athlete Jessi Warren as the only other Seminole to record 50+ RBIs in three seasons.
Later in the game, Edenfield was a part of a triple play, FSU’s first since April 1, 2017, against Pitt. Auburn tried to bounce back in the fourth with runners on first and second and no outs. After grounding into a 4-6-3 double play, the runner from second attempted to score. The first baseman fired home to Edenfield, who applied the tag to end the inning.
The Seminoles will host Texas Tech at the Tallahassee Super Regional. Play begins Thursday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2
